History

For 75 years, Zippo have Manufactured their famous lighter, the world-famous windproof design and click shut lid, has made it a must have style item ,as with all icons the Zippo lighter has changed very little since early development . Zippo was founded in Pennsylvania in 1932 when George G. Blaisdell decided to create a lighter that would look good and be easy to use. Blaisdell obtained the rights for an Austrian windproof lighter with a removable top, and re-designed it to his own requirements. Blaisdell called his new lighter “Zippo” after another recent invention, the zipper, because he liked the sound of the word. From the very start he gave his new invention ‘the Zippo lighter’ a lifetime manufacturer’s guarantee as an additional feature!

Since the first lighter was created in early 1932 and except for improvements in the flint wheel and modifications in case finishes, Blaisdell’s original lighter design remains virtually unchanged.
